Spar Scotland has unveiled major investments in new stores, technology and digital shopper engagement at its 2025 tradeshow in Aviemore last week.
The company confirmed its Relex demand planning and forecasting platform is now live across its supplier network. Rollout across all 115 company-owned stores has been completed, which it described as a “significant step” towards improving product availability and forecasting accuracy. Suppliers were also invited to engage in the next phase of the rollout.
Spar Scotland has also expanded its estate, acquiring 12 company-owned stores in the past year, including three former Eddy’s Food Station outlets and nine Scotfresh convenience stores.

Other developments unveiled during the event included a new CJ’s food-to-go loyalty app, designed to communicate with and reward customers, and the continued rollout of Barista Bar coffee, electronic shelf edge labels and digital signage across company-owned stores.
The business also used the event to highlight its Discover Spar Scotland campaign, aimed at showcasing the benefits of joining the symbol group to prospective independent retailers.
Colin McLean, chief executive of Spar Scotland, said it had been a “difficult year” for convenience in Scotland. “Trading conditions have been challenging, and we expect to face continued economic headwinds in the months ahead. Inflationary pressures, shifts in consumer behaviour and rising operating costs are all contributing to an environment where resilience and adaptability are more important than ever.
“We are under no illusion about the realities of the market, but we remain absolutely focused on building the best possible version of SPAR for shoppers, suppliers and independent retailers alike. That means doubling down on investment where it counts – modernising our stores, supporting our people, developing our supply chain and backing innovation that adds real value.”
