Cider’s performance in the convenience channel is performing ahead of the total market, with crafted lines continuing to drive growth, according to Westons Cider’s latest report.
The supplier’s annual report on the cider category found that ales in convenience now account for 51.7% of total cider sales, up from 51.1% last year. The channel has also seen year-on-year value growth of 1.8% and volume decline of 1.5%, compared to the total market’s 0.6% value growth and 1.7% volume decline.
Sally McKinnon, head of marketing & strategy at Westons Cider, said: “Convenience retailers are playing an increasingly important role in the cider category. As shoppers drink less but trade up in quality, the channel is well placed to meet demand for premium cider, trusted brands and formats suited to everyday drinking occasions.”

Within convenience, the crafted segment has increased in value by 10.4%, compared to 7.6% overall. Henry Westons Vintage 500ml remains the number one cider line in convenience, worth more than twice the second-bestselling product. The only other cider segment in growth in the off-trade is value amber, growing by 3.6%.
McKinnon added: “Crafted cider is delivering disproportionate value growth. With a significantly higher price per litre than the category average, it taps directly into what today’s drinkers are seeking — drinks with provenance, authenticity, and flavour. Prioritising bestselling premium brands and ensuring strong availability represents a clear opportunity for convenience retailers to drive both value and margin.”
